Week of July 28

Week 37 - if you could care less about prepping for a baby, then this post is probably not for you.  I'm getting really excited about this little guy.

Sunday
My parents came to visit.  My dad has a booth in a flea market and wanted to bring some more stuff to put in his booth.  As it turns out, his booth was almost bare from the last time he put stuff in it about 3 weeks ago.  I know he was excited about that.  :-)

Also, we've been able to shut off the air conditioner and just leave our windows open.  It's the end of July, how crazy is that?  This fat girl isn't complaining though.  I am loving it.  I love being able to sleep with the windows open.  When we lived in Indiana we could never do that because if fire trucks from the station across the street aren't loud enough with the windows closed, they are crazy loud with the windows open.   It's so nice to live in a quiet town.  Do you know what else I like about not living in Louisville anymore?  Whenever people talk about the Cardinals, they mean the St. Louis Cardinals, not the Louisville Cardinals.

Caleb added to his stringed family again.  My dad gave Caleb this ukulele, and he's pretty excited about it.  Although every time I hear him strumming on it, I can't help but think about that girl on Raising Hope.

Since so many people were giving me a hard time at church about not having my hospital bag packed yet, I got it packed Sunday night.

Monday
Caleb went and got the van inspected and we finally got it licensed.  For some reason Boone county only has one license office and since it was the end of the month the place was really busy.  But we survived!

Tuesday
I got several of my sewing projects done. When I went up to my sewing machine, this note was on it:
:-D  He's my favorite
I started with the car seat strap covers.  My sister-in-law gave me some green turtle flannel so I made one side with that.  For the other side I used the little cotton fabric bag that Target crib sheets come in.  I also used the Velcro from that bag for the straps.  Sometimes it pays off to not throw everything away. :-)

Here's the bag the sheets came in that I was able to cut up:

Side one:

Side two:

And they are George tested and approved!

I also made a nursing cover (also known as a hooter hider....tee hee).  I've wanted one but when I saw the price of them, I knew there was no way I was buying one.  I found a tutorial for one online. The total I spent on this was $3.70.  That's more like it.

Complete with terry cloth pockets on both bottom corners (pockets for convenience, terry cloth in case of spit up):

And an adjustable strap:

I also made a curtain for the window on the door right next to the crib.  I used the green turtle flannel again and lined it with some dark blue fabric.  There were already some curtain rod brackets on the door but they didn't quite fit the curtain rods that I had, but nothing that a little bending with pliers couldn't fix.  I was able to get the rods put on the door pretty tight so hopefully the tot can't pull it down when he gets big enough.

Then I tackled a bumbo seat cover.  Our pastor's wife from Indiana gave us a hand-me-down bumbo seat awhile back.  It's pink, and we didn't know what we were having at the time, but I wasn't about to turn down a bumbo seat!  Since we found out we were having a boy I've been planning on making a cover for it.  I'm not very good at sewing, especially if the project involves sewing something other than straight lines.  If there's something a bumbo seat cover doesn't have, it's straight lines.  After almost three hours of frustration, I came up with this.  I think it will at least get the job done....and by that I mean that Caleb might let me use the bumbo with this on it.  :-)

Bumbo before:

Bumbo after:
Just don't look too closely at it.

Wednesday
The baby's room is finally done.  Yay!!  You probably saw most of these pictures on facebook, but here they are again.

The wreath on his door.  We'll put his name on the cross when it's officially on the birth certificate.  You never know when we are going to want to change our minds.  :-)

We don't have very much closet space on the first floor (That closet door to the left there is full of my clothes since we don't have a closet in our bedroom).  His clothes look a lot cuter hanging up like that than mine would anyway.  These are all just 0-3 months, the ones that wouldn't fit in his dresser drawers.  He's going to be one well-dressed kid.

Toys and books.

I also got his bouncy seat put together.
And the pack n play

And then on Wednesday our swing was delivered.  I opened the box and starting pulling the parts out.  When I came across the bag of screws, I screwed up my nose and put everything back.  Fortunately Caleb took the hint and put it together for me.  He's the best.

I'm excited about this swing because not only does it plug into the wall (why do they even make so many that don't??) but it also plays music and swings from side to side or you can turn the seat 90 degrees so that it swings from front to back.

I do have a closet just for the baby upstairs with things that I won't need on a regular basis.  He has four more tubs of clothes and a couple of extra diapers.

Thursday
I got some more sewing done.  I started off with making my own version of a Baby K'tan carrier.  Although I'm not totally sure how it turned out.  I think it might be a tad too small because my fabric isn't as stretchy as the fabric they are supposed to be made out of.  It also doesn't help trying to judge the size of it when I have a big ol' belly in the way and only a stuffed curious George to try to use as a baby guide.  Maybe I'll show you pictures when my tot is born and if he fits in it.  :-)

I also made some pillows for our futon.  I had found this fabric on clearance at the Hob Lob awhile back but never got around to making the pillows.  We have several old pillows laying around from our quest to find Caleb the perfect pillow (after I threw away his beloved one) so I was able to use the stuffing from those to fill these pillows.

Caleb has the futon in his office and he likes to have pillows around him when he's sitting, so I made sure to get his approval of the size of these so he would like them.

Friday
We had our 37 week appointment.  I'm measuring right at 36 weeks and no change from when I was checked last week.  Baby is still happily cooking!

One thing I love about doctor appointments is that it means Target isn't too far away.  :-)  I worked for quite awhile on Thursday to get coupons together to get some sweet deals.  Like the two boxes of diapers that I got for $13.30 each.  I'm not sure how much they normally are but they were on sale for $24.99.  That's like half off, if not better!

Last week at my doctor's appointment she gave me a prescription for a breast pump.  I took the prescription to a medical supply store on Monday and they had to check with my insurance before they were able to give me one, so I wasn't able to take it home until Friday.  My insurance fully covered the best breast pump that they had.  It's a double electric pump (that had a $275 price sticker on it. Yikes!)  They also had a lactation consultant who showed me how it works.  After my post last week, several people messaged me and told me that they are available to answer any questions I have about breast feeding.  You, my readers, rock.  It's nice to know I have that kind of support! I can do this!

We went to Barnes and Noble while we were at the mall to look for a book for Caleb and they had a $2 clearance table.  Caleb Baby got a new toy.

Saturday
We went to my sister-in-law's house for her baby's first birthday.  I'm pretty sure that big brother enjoyed the toys more than her little one did, but I think that was to be expected.  :-)  It's crazy to think that our little boy is going to be hobbling around this time next year just like her baby is.  My baby isn't even born yet and he's growing up too fast!

I've definitely been feeling a lot more back pain the past couple of days, and I expect that to only get worse.  I think with each passing day I'm going to be more and more ready for him to make his debut.

  2. The nursery looks beautiful! I love sewing and creating things like you have done, that is the best part to me!! I have bibs cut out for Sky, my 9 month old granddaughter and I used towels for the backing-much cheaper than terry cloth fabric at the store! Bed sheets are another item I have used, you can by a twin flat sheet at Walmart for around $5. We had a daybed, buy a full or queen comforter, cut along the edge that gets tucked in across the back of the bed; cut the entire full width of the comforter and use this extra fabric to make matching pillows. With a futon you would probly want a queen or king comforter. I love doing this kind of sewing!!
